Thank you, Fred. Weiner's not so easy to come by (and even now, if his work is featured on a CD, it's pretty likely that the performer's name is also Hungarian).

Hi,
I've enjoyed these, especially Haydn Op.77, again and again, and wish to thank you. Wonderful share. I seem to remember a Mr. Kroll at the University of Illinois way back in the early 70s when I was there for summer camp. I played in groups conducted by Bernard Goodman, violinist of another quartet that I think was based at the U of I in the 50s. Is there a chance that William Kroll ended up at U of I too?

Thanks for making this available. I knew Ben; he was a great composer and a fine human being. Despite having his works performed by the best musicians and orchestras in the world from the 60's on, he never really got the recognition and accolades due a composer of his stature. When he passed two years ago he was hard at work on a second violin concerto, so let's hope that someday we can hear what was completed. If his first violin concerto is any indication, his second will be a barn burner.

Dear Fred,

John Bennett's Melodiya discography lists a Rakhlin recording of the 2nd Symphony, but neither he nor any of the editions of WERM list a no. 1 conducted by him. Bennett offers Golovanov, WERM Ivanov.

But WERM stops c.1956 and Bennett, though a brilliant piece of research, is not complete, so it could be a later recording (I hadn't realised that Rakhlin died as recently as 1979.) Does your LP have a date?

Anyway, thanks for this fascinating post - can't wait to hear the performances.

Not only do I enjoy much of the music of Nelhybel, but I am a fervent admirer of the music of Nicolas Flagello, who I agree is greatly under-rated as a composer. I don't know whether you are aware, but a large proportion of his music is now available on CD--much of it never performed during his lifetime. These recordings have been very well received by those who have heard them, but--alas--few have heard them. I believe that if you and your readers enjoy, say, the music of Samuel Barber, they will not be disappointed by Flagello.

Glad you like! You know, in recent years I have become a big, BIG piano buff and I enjoy making discoveries like this one. This cycle is really excellent abnd it brilliantly captures the "sights and sounds" of Spain, maybe as well as Smetana's Ma Vlast.
